Within‐colony segregation of foraging areas: from patterns to processes

چکیده

Spatial segregation of foraging areas among conspecifics breeding in neighbouring colonies has been observed several colonial vertebrates and is assumed to originate from competition information use. Segregation between individuals different parts a same colony comparatively received limited attention, even though it may have strong impacts on structure individual fitness, thus population dynamics species. To shed light the processes (namely memory) driving small-scale spatial species, we used empirical data developed an based model (IBM). By GPS tracking lesser kestrels Falco naumanni urban area surrounding farmland, found that nesting two close-by (ca 600 m) roof terraces (i.e. nest clusters) were significantly spatially segregated. Individuals clusters showed departure bearings encountered habitats but similar fitness traits. cluster did not seem follow when leaving for trip. The IBM, seven terraces, such collective does necessitate social use: personal memory be sufficient mechanistically explain intra-colony areas. Besides, there was clear distance-dependent segregation: distant segregated more, matching what at large scales colonies). Our results do question fact species use during or can act as centres. Instead, they suggest within-colony range segregation, arising simple mechanisms necessarily involving sharing, might widespread systems. These further challenge long-standing view should regarded single cohesive entities.

Synergy in spreading processes: from exploitative to explorative foraging strategies.

An epidemiological model which incorporates synergistic effects that allow the infectivity and/or susceptibility of hosts to be dependent on the number of infected neighbors is proposed. Constructive synergy induces an exploitative behavior which results in a rapid invasion that infects a large number of hosts. Interfering synergy leads to a slower and sparser explorative foraging strategy that...

Patterns of Residential Segregation

The spatial distribution of income shapes the structure and organisation of cities and its understanding has broad societal implications. Despite an abundant literature, many issues remain unclear. In particular, all definitions of segregation are implicitely tied to a single indicator, usually rely on an ambiguous definition of income classes, without any consensus on how to define neighbourho...
